Are Lasers or Microwaves a threat?

Lasers are not a viable threat at this time. Microwave is the most serious threat.

In terms of the eavesdropping potential, microwave devices pose the most serious threat. The use of microwave transmitters in micro-miniature surveillance devices have made the bugs extremely small and difficult to detect, especially without the correct equipment. These ultra tiny cameras need only a pinhole sized opening to see everything clearly. The result is a device small enough to fit into books, sunglasses, neck ties, radios, clocks, water bottles, cigarette packs, items of clothing, hats, or any other clever package. This means that anyone can be carrying a tiny concealed eavesdropping device disguised as almost anything, or an ultra small bugging device can be placed almost anywhere without being seen. The only way to detect these bugs with any confidence is electronically, using TSCM techniques.

With the advancement of miniature technology and the drastic reduction of price, micro-miniature surveillance and bugging devices have proliferated in every part of society. It has become quite easy to purchase these devices via the internet or through one of the many dealers. This makes the threat of being bugged is far more serious than ever.

The use of microwaves by clandestine organizations (such as the KGB) to alter behavior, control individuals, or effect the health of targets has been reported, but the overall effects and usefulness are still controversial. Although there is concern about the potential of these attacks, they aren't common. The level of sophistication required to launch this type of attack is very high and the equipment needed is expensive and isn't readily available.
